Archipelago GO-GO-GROW

Port area redevelopment project

Project Image

Task

The Linnanniemi port redevelopment project in Turku is surrounded by the incredible beauty of Finland's northern archipelagos. One of the project’s central ideas is to create an environment where one can live, work, find inspiration, grow, evolve, and access all necessities in a single place called 'Home' - all within a thirty-minute walk. This philosophy is reflected in the project's name: Archipelago-go-grow.

Solution

At the center of the project territory lies an ancient heritage site -Turku Castle - around which the new development unfolds. The project provides for the preservation and reconstruction of several buildings, forming a market square where two existing structures are retained. For instance, the ruins of an old ferry terminal are transformed into year-round farms and greenhouses for cultivating local produce.

The natural beauty of the archipelagos extends into our site, where water reaches deep into the territory to create an urban oasis. Here, spaces for solitude coexist with areas of vibrant, modern life. New blocks, housing, commercial spaces, student campuses, sports hubs, cultural and historical sites, and parks provide the territory with a new functional diversity, making it both viable and self-sufficient.
